We went camping at Niagara Falls and it was amazing! The drive took us about 6.5hrs and it wasn't a bad drive, but lots of tolls. When we got close the water started off very calm and I was wondering if we were in the right place. Then once we parked and got out of the car, we walked down to the falls and it was more than we imagined! The power of the water was outstanding and the the size of it all was just overwhelming.

We were there really early in the morning so we had the place to ourselves. We walked around with the dog and too all the pictures we wanted, without having them full of others. It is a really nice place and we were pleasantly surprised with nice trails to wonder around on which lead to other views of the falls. We walked around and were just taking in everything, the falls, Rainbow bridge, the noise, the Hard Rock and Planet Hollywood Canada.... it was beautiful! After several hours of wandering we decided to go and check out the campsite and then we would come back later and do all the tourist stuff without the dog!

We got the Niagara Falls KOA and checked in, its a really nice place and it was cheap and perfect for us with the dog. We set up the tent and made a quick lunch of brats and then started relaxing. At the campsite there are a couple catch-n-release ponds that were fun to throw into. Unfortunately we were the only ones unable to catch anything. It was still fun though.

After some relaxing and a short nap we went back to do the Maid of the Mist! As soon as we got back, we realized how smart it was to have gotten so early in the morning and get the pictures and sightseeing out of the way.... it was full of people now! So we zoomed right over to the MM and jumped in line, where they quickly gave us our free ponchos!

When we got on we went to the top of the boat and in the front. As soon as we headed closer to the falls you could really hear the power of the falls. It wasn't very misty at first,
passing the American Side of the falls, but as soon as we got into Horse Shoe Falls that changed quickly. We were surrounded by pounding water and we were definitely in the mist! We were also getting wet and cold, I recommend going in a little warmer time of year maybe.

After all the excitement we went back and checked on the dog. Once we knew he was okay and happy we decided to go have a little fun at the mini-golf and go-karts place that was right next to the campground. We had a good round of golf, and then decided that the go-karts looked like fun. Moni told me she had never done it, so we had to! Of course, we both had a blast!

After the days activities we were getting worn down so we went back and made a fire, played with the dog and ate dinner. After a wonerful grill and chill, we went to go drink with some fellow campers we met early that happened to be from England and Australia. We had an amaing night of drinking games and smores! Made it back to the tent and had a wonderful night sleep and woke up to slight drizzle Sunday morning. We slept in long enough for the sun to expel the clouds, packed and drove home. What an amazing weekend!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17002067327920144105noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1101503081574055410.post-7918377972843372342009-11-18T08:07:00.000-08:002009-11-18T17:55:37.295-08:00Fly with Your DogFlying with your dog can be a very worrying process, believe me. However, it will all work out fine for both your dog and your nerves if you do your research and plan ahead. If you are planning on flying with your dog there are a few things you need to do to make sure everyone gets to the destination together!

First of all you need to see what your airlines requirements are, some of them are standard. Things like the type of kennel you need, and notification time, water&food bowls, vet documentation etc. will be necessary for all airlines.

Most airlines require you to have a kennel that is hard plastic, top and bottom screw together, holes on all sides, and a metal locking door. This is important because I personally had to buy a new kennel because I had the all metal, prison bars style, collapsible kennel. Some of these also come with the door attachable bowls, some don't. If you have to buy them, buy the cheapest ones, because those are the ones that the airlines have and they will just exchange the ones that they have full with your empty ones. So dont get anything fancy, you might not see it again. The way they do it is they freeze water in the bowls and then snap those to the kennels, that way the dog can get water the whole flight and not worry about it spilling all over the kennel too. A really good idea actually, because I know I was wondering how this worked. Also you probably won't need food for your dog during the flight, no matter how long. Dogs can go days without food, just like humans, it's the water that's important. However, if it is a longer flight, international, then it is a good idea to give them some before you get on, I suggest a can of food, because it's tastier than dry food, and most dogs will eat it right up, so you're not waiting.

Next thing you'll have to do is get a clean bill of health from your veterinarian. They usually have this document or know what you, or you can print one off the internet. Basically it is a liability thing for the airline, to state the dog's health before it got on the plane so if it dies, god forbid, they can say it wasn't their fault. Most airlines require that you get this down within 10days of the actual flight, so don't do it too early. This document will say that all your shots are up to date, and that the dog is healthy enough for flight, and what conditions they can and cannot withstand. You can also ask you vet about whether or not you should give your dog sleeping pills. When I took Max overseas, I asked and they said that he didn't need it, unless I thought it was necessary. They said, sometimes if dogs are nervous, or have car sickness or whatever that it may be a good idea, just to keep the dog calm. So ask, if you're worried, they'll let you know, based on the dog.

Most airlines will also require you to give them 14 days notice that you are going to be flying with your pet. You can tell them when you you're buying your ticket but it won't make any difference because that person really has no control over whether or not it gets approved or the information gets passed on. You will need to call back and let them know your confirmation info and then inform them that you are wanting to fly your dog. This is very important because they will put in all sorts of tags on your flight so that your dog can be picked up and delivered by the appropriate people.

The last step you have to make sure that you get all your confirmations, because I had some problems traveling with my dog. I had everyone I talked to tell me Yes Yes Yes he can go, no one ever said no. Then when I went to the airport at 5am extra early for my 9am flight, that's when they told me, "Oh you can't go, the kennel is too big for the cargo doors on the last plane." I was so upset, because I had given all the information and got all my okays, and then the day I go to fly they say we can't. I got lucky and complained, and waited long enough, to finally get someone who was nice enough, and high enough up the food chain, to actually do something. In the end they actually had to switch my last flight to another carrier, with bigger planes, but we made it.

Don't worry about your baby on the way though, they take really good care of them. They have designated pet people in every airport, that know when, where, and what animal is coming. I actually got to hang out with him in the Minneapolis Airport Pet Area. It was nice, just a little garage area with the floor painted green. The lady there was really nice and said that they get all sorts of animals there everyday. I asked if they got anything exotic and she said, "Yea we get lions, tigers, monkeys, alligators.... you name it, I've put it on a plane!" AWESOME! She also told me that Amsterdam has the best pet area in the world. The have a whole play area, large walking area where they take them on walks, I was really happy to hear that. So it made me feel a lot better about being away from him for two more flights. In the end we made it to Prague together, and Max had to take a 10min piss!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17002067327920144105noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1101503081574055410.post-87396477708159027082009-11-11T04:33:00.000-08:002009-11-11T06:40:56.466-08:00Maximus at the Prague Zoo
While living in Prague, Max and I visited the zoo. That's right you can take your dog to the zoo in Europe! We got to see lots of animals and smells, Max had a blast! So, the second animal we saw was this monkey who absoluetly loved to antagonize dogs. Max, of course, didn't like that the monkey was talking so much shit, or that there was glass between them! That is why we took him on our spring break to Lake Powell. When we were thinking of where to go for our spring break, a friend recommended Lake Powell to us. Not knowing too much about it I looked it up. Lake Powell was an easy decision after that.
So I began recruiting people and putting together prices. I knew we would need a lot to put it all together, so I searched every option. After I assessed the prices I started seeing how many people we would need to make it cost effective, yet still not too crowded. I ended up with a perfect number of 8. It turned out that we ended up getting a rental car , houseboat , and a speedboat for eight days.
It took a long time to get there all the way from Kansas, and it was quite a trip packed in the Dodge Caravan with eight people and the dog, but it was fun. We made some road food and stopped only for gas and bathroom breaks. Once we started getting closer the scenery was beautiful and we kept getting more and more excited. We could see all the beautiful colors and canyons, everyone was bouncing around in their seats! We finally got to where we could see the lake and it was on!
We got on our houseboat that night and went to the nearby Walmart, which was over the dam, so we got to take a good long look at the top of the Grandy Canyon, which some of us had never seen. It was everything and more you've ever heard about or seen in books. The next morning we got an early start on the water and were off. It was the perfect time of year to go, not to cold not too hot, and it was early enough that we had the whole lake to ourselves. We didn't see but 1 or 2 boats the entire week; everywhere we went the lake was like glass, and you couldn't tell where the cliffs ended and the water began, that is until we came flying through the canyons in our speed boat!
It was awesome, we would move the houseboat every other day and take the speed boat into the canyons and on our day trips to sight see. We would go down in some canyons to the point where the boat barely fit, and people we guiding us through with their hands on the rocks so the boat wouldn't touch, SO FUN!
We did everything, including gas and food, for $500 each! That's one thing that you really have to think about is gas on the water, because if you think the on-land gas prices are high, add a couple dollars for being on the water! As you can see, we had the time of our lives. We lived in Prague for a year and we loved it. It was great because we could go everywhere with the dog, bo questions asked. He even went to the pubs and stores with us. The only places he couldn't go were places that sold food, like grocery stores, but when we went there he just waited outside with the other dogs until I came out and off we went. We could go everywhere in the city without a leash which was awesome because Maximus is so well trained. Imagine a city of 2million people and no one was afraid of my "big scary pitbull" it was so great. All they noticed was how good he was.
The only time that I was required to put him on the leash was on public transportation where he was also supposed to have a muzzle on, which we didn't do every time. That's right my baby has been on every mode of transportation imaginable; planes, trains, buses, metros, trams, boats you name it he's done it!
We visited all the important places you can see in Prague. Prague Castle, The Old Town Square, Wenceslav Square, St. Vit's Cathedral, The Jewish Quarter, Lesser Town, New Town, National Theatre, Dancing House, Charles Bridge, Petrin Tower, Vysehrad and more and more. We even lived right next to Mozart's House Bertramka, we would walk by there almost everyday just to get some excercise, it was crazy to think that one of the greatest composers ever lived right up the hill from where we were living!
Of course Maximus went everywhere with us. He loves to see everything, just as much as we do! As a matter of fact I think he may enjoy it more! Everywhere we went we even had people asking us if they could take pictures of him, because they thought my dog was so beautiful! Which of course, he is, so I let them snap as many as they'd like.... most of the time they even asked me to move so they could just get him!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17002067327920144105noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1101503081574055410.post-22229571955689275012009-11-09T17:51:00.000-08:002009-11-09T18:26:14.222-08:00Europe

That's right my dog has a passport.
